SAM
WILSON GETS A FREE 60,000 BAHT HAIRDO BY JOHNY LIVE By Mike Franklin
I should hastily
qualify the headline by saying that Johny Lives’ hairdos
are not that expensive – in fact he is quite competitive.
But this was, after all, a rather special hair session for a
rather special and brave lady.
Sam Wilson, suffering from alopecia, decided that if she was
going to lose all her hair she might as well turn it into a
charity event and raise money for the Jesters ‘Care for
Kids’ Charity Drive by having a sponsored head-shave in
Jameson’s. This rather brave decision to be ‘Joan-of-Arc’d
in public immediately received a positive response and the sponsorships,
orchestrated by Landlord Kim, poured in. Expert hair stylist
and renowned color specialist, Johny Live, was engaged to create
a style for Sam that did not draw on any of his Vidal Sassoon
training and, more to the point, totally ruled out the chance
of any repeat business.
The sponsors came, Woody and the Jesters came, the Care for
Kids Committee came, Ingrid Cunliffe was there for the honorary
Jesters and PILC with many of the PILC Ladies in evidence, and
Muffy Kerr rounded up a few last minute sponsors. As it was
March 17th and in Jameson’s, a few Irish mutterings were
heard around the bar - one imbiber actually asking how much
it would cost to have his wife done too, and could it be a benefit
night for him. But then it was St. Patrick’s Day!
Sam was valiant throughout, kept an increasingly cool head and
was brave to the last. For such an act, words and photos are
not enough, so the PMTV crew filmed all the action and that
can be seen on PMTV Saturday 22nd March on all five networks.
This was the first Jesters Care for Kids’ fund raising
activity for 2008 and undoubtedly one of the most original,
thanks to courageous Sam Wilson and the skills of Johny Live
with the clippers.
All said and done, 60,000 baht raised made Sam Wilson a Gold
sponsor, with still more to come from a PILC Ladies Coffee Morning
due the next day.
Great stuff in the true spirit of the 11th Jesters ‘Care
for Kids’ Charity Drive.

Presentation
at Baan Pan Sadek Nork School
On Tuesday February 19th representatives
from Pattaya International Ladies Club , Jesters Care for Kids
Charity Drives and Jameson’s Pub gathered at Baan Pan
Sadek Nork School in order to receive thanks for some recent
donations. This is a small rural school with a student population
of approximately 60 which is located past the Borwin Industrial
Estate on Highway 331.
It was an exciting occasion for
all the teachers and pupils from the school which teaches children
from Kindergarten to Year 6. The children in attendance at the
presentation were all neatly dressed and well behaved and sat
quietly for the proceedings.
Ajaan Tanyaporn Poonshinnapat (Tui) from the teaching staff
firstly introduced the staff members of the school and then
the visitors. The director of the school Ajaan Somsak Buathong
was on hand to present the certificates and even gave a short
speech in English which was a good effort and most impressive.
The first presentation was to
Mr Lewis Underwood from Jesters Care for Kids Charity Drives
and there was a certificate and a large plague to thank him
for donating over 80,000bht to the school. This money was used
for the building of a water tower over the schools existing
well and pump and to install plumbing needed to many parts of
the school.
After that, the PILC’s Ingrid
Cuniliff, Kathleen Petras, Janis Cotterell and Yoko Yamaguchi
were thanked for providing much needed school uniforms, school
shoes for students in all levels of the school that needed them
and storage cubicles for the kindergarten classrooms.
Also Khun Wanchai Pingate from
Jamesons Pub was sincerely thanked for taking time out from
his work at Jameson’s ( with his Boss’s blessing
of course) to construct some football goals for the schools
footballers. Khun Wanchai has made football goals for many schools
in the past and enjoys seeing the students getting good use
out of them. The goal posts are constructed inexpensively using
substitute materials for example fishing netting instead of
authentic goalpost netting. He is looking forward to making
more goal posts for other needy schools in the future. The students
will also shortly be receiving a lot of new footballs courtesy
of Jamesons!!!
Three very brave students from
the school gave speeches of thanks and one of the students had
even prepared her speech in English for us. Needless to say
we were very impressed. By the way if anyone from the ladies
club has any free time to teach a little English this school
is always happy to have a new teacher!!
Throughout the proceedings a great many photo’s were taken
and a lot more were taken afterwards outside the canteen/presentation
area at the site of the newly constructed water tower. We also
had a peek in the windows of the two kindergarten classrooms
to see the peacefully napping children but were not surprised
to find that they jumped up in excitement when their director
called out to them that they were being watched!!!

Jesters
Charity Drive 2008
Here we go into 2008's
Jesters Charity Drive. We are now in our 11th
year for a full history of the
Charity Drive please look up the Care4Kids
website or see the quick history at the bottom of this page.
The Fair will be held at
the Diana Driving Range and Resort (See Map Below) on Sunday 14th
September, starting at 10.a.m. This is a wonderful
event. Keep an eye on the Pattaya
Mail every week for updates on what is happening
and where. Lots of action on the stages, many stalls for you to
browse round and perhaps buy the odd thing, Judi
McNamara will again be running the second hand
book stall under the Easy Rider
Banner (Jameson's
is a collecting point for all your second hand books, and we are
collecting now so please bring along any books you have that you
really do not want anymore, so we can sort them out into categories.
It is a fantastic way to make money as their is no cost and all
money goes to the kids).
There are also many other stalls, plenty of food stalls, 'Pat's
Pies' and 'Belgian Patrick's' always being amongst
Kim Fletcher, the Fat Landlord
of Jameson's choice. Then of course there is
The Jesters Beer Tent. This is truly a
tent of many wonders Neil Sandilands
always makes sure that the beer is ice cold, with help from the
likes of Jeff Paladeau, and Paul
Baker and the rest of the
Jesters, there is a marvelous beer garden at
The Diana Driving Range and Resort, so
that after you have had a wander round the stalls and done your
bit, (Had a go on Stephan Ryser's
stall, or perhaps gone to see Bert
from Tropical Bert's Pub on the
British Legion stall, a must stop is Mike
Franklin's Children's Fair Children's Raffle),
you have somewhere to relax and catch up with friends old and
new. The best bit about the beer tent is though that all the beer
is donated by various bars and individuals so again all the money
taken goes directly to the kids. So the more beer you drink the
more money goes to the children.
Overseeing the whole Fair is
the marvelous Kevin Mitch of Blue
Parrot fame, Kevin
has been organizing the logistics of the Fair
now for many years, and I do not know what we
would do without him now. Always in attendance is Lewis
(Woody) Underwood who this year has stepped down
from being President of the Jesters
Motorbike Club, so he had concentrate his undivided
attention to the Charity Drive
because this little baby we have created is now a 12 month of
the year operation.
The stage entertainment is organized by Rick
Bryant and Pop, of Pop's Pattaya All Stars, with
shows from acrobatic teams, all the schools in the district put
on some form of show, and trying to keep some form of order on
the stage is Poodle Pete and Neil
Smith. Now the Fair
is on Sunday 14th September starting
at 10.00 a.m. at the Diana Driving Range and Resort
on the corner of Pattaya North Road
and Sukumvit, and do not worry there is ample
parking.
Then on Saturday 20th September
we have the Jesters Party Night
at Jameson's the Irish Pub starting at 6.00 p.m.,
and as it say's in the title it is a party, lot's of bands on
stage. Look out for Sister Joan
and the other sisters sitting quietly in a corner somewhere, but
always keen to talk to anybody, who would like to know more about
The Fountain of Life.
Paul Jackson and Andy Francis will again be MC's
and Lewis (Woody)
Underwood will be keeping us up to date with what
is going on and how much etc. Last year Jeff
Paladeau and Graham MacDonald found hidden talents
as auctioneers for the various items in the auction.
The Auction is already running as you
are reading this just press the Auction
link at the side of this page to see all the items up for sale
and if you see anything you fancy, put in a bid which will then
be put up on site. The Jesters Auction
list is also on many other sites around
Pattaya. As we get nearer to the event,
this link will also show the prizes for the Raffle
and also Mike Franklin's Children's
Raffle at the Fair.
Watch out for the spotters during the auction last year Bob
(Scar) Taylor was a show in himself. Lynden
and Ingrid (Our Tooth Fairy) rush around like
maniacs making sure that everybody is happy, and gets what they
want from the auction or collect their winnings from the raffle.
Wild Bill stands
in the back keeping control of everything in his quiet unassuming
way. Whilst The Pattaya Mail record
everything for posterity. The
Night is meant as a celebration of 12 month's
activity. Keep an eye out too for Captain
Steve Ponter, a man who since he has joined
the Jesters Charity Drive
has had an absolute fire of passion in his heart for the cause,
and just as you think you have bid for something, Steve
will come in and gazzump you. Jon
Fox and Ray Matti are pretty good at that too,
although last year they were all out done by Andy
Latimer.
Of course none of this could happen without our fabulous sponsors,
to find out who they are (or if you want to participate in any
way). Please look up our website at www.care4kids.info

Now most people know about Woody and Captain Steve, but here
is a little bit about Tony and Tor.
Glencore
Glencore International AG is one of the world's largest suppliers
of a wide range of commodities and raw materials to industrial
consumers. Our commercial counterparts are both producers and
industrial consumers. Our role is to be a reliable and competitive
partner to businesses in the segments of the market which we
serve and to support these businesses as they expand and develop.
Our customers
around the world, in industries such as automotive, power generation,
steel production and food processing, rely upon our established
global network of operations as a source of Metals and Minerals,
Crude Oil and Oil Products, Coal and Agricultural Products.
These commodities
originate either from Glencore's directly or indirectly owned
production assets, or are secured by Glencore from third parties,
or they benefit from the refining, processing or marketing expertise
of Glencore.

History
Founded in 1974, Glencore initially focused on the physical
marketing of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals, Minerals and Crude
Oil. Subsequently, the Company expanded into Oil Products and
Coal as part of the Energy Products group. The acquisition of
a well established Dutch Grain marketing company in 1982 created
the basis for the Agricultural Products group.
Following
the acquisitions of interests in production assets in mining,
smelting, refining and processing, Glencore evolved from a pure
physical commodity marketing company into a diversified natural
resources group.
In 1987,
a subsidiary of Glencore acquired 27% of the Mt. Holly Aluminium
smelter in the United States. The first controlling interest
in an industrial asset was secured in 1988, with the purchase
of a 66.7% interest in Perubar, a Zinc/Lead mine in Peru. Today,
the Company and its subsidiaries own and operate 18 large scale
production assets across a range of commodities.
In addition, Glencore directly or through its subsidiaries holds
significant stakes in publicly listed companies Xstrata Plc.
(UK), Century Aluminum (USA) and Minara Resources (Australia).
Glencore
is a privately held company, wholly owned by its management
and key employees.
This structure aligns the interests of shareholders with management
and has developed the strong culture of excellence and teamwork
which has been an important element of the Company’s successful
growth over the past 33 years.

Jesters
Care For Kids Charity Drive History
The Jesters ‘Care for Kids’ Charity Drives
began in 1998 after Alice and Niel Poulsen met up with
a few of the Jesters MC Thailand members. An informal meeting
ensued with Kim Fletcher and friends at Delaney’s (now Shenanigans)
and the seed to start a charity drive was sown. The result was
a hastily put together effort consisting of one Platinum Sponsor
(Chonburi Siam Steel Mill Services) and one event, a Pub Night
of raffle drawings and auctions. It was held in early September
at Delaney’s and we raised 1 million baht
for our sole beneficiary, the Fountain of Life Children’s
Center. (www.fountainoflifepattaya.com)
In 1999, we started our Jesters
Children’s Fair, Sponsored Push Bike Ride (aka Nappy Rash
Ride) to go along with our Pub Night. The Venue for the Fair was
at the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel. One of the highlights of the Fair
was the tug-of-war when the out-of-shape Haven’s Heavy Haulers
beat the muscle bound Universe Gym team. We raised 1.4
million baht.
The events for our millennium Charity
Drive were held at the Amari Orchid Hotel in North Pattaya. The
Fair was held in the lower gardens across from the beach and the
Pub Night at Henry J. Beans. The Governor of Chonburi attended
the Fair and soon after the Fountain of Life Center obtained their
official status as the Good Shepherd Foundation. In this
year, 2000, we raised 2.2 million baht.
In 2001, we moved the Fair to Siam
Bayshore Hotel in South Pattaya and our Pub Night back to Shenanigan’s.
Shenanigan’s also became a Platinum Sponsor, which along
with Chonburi Siam Steel Mill Services, was the first time we
had more than one Platinum Sponsor.
Eric Sorenson was a huge help this year when he alone raised over
253 thousand baht for the Sponsored Push Bike Ride. This was also
the year our website was initiated, courtesy of Susie Ngamsuwan.
We kicked off our Pub Night with Chris Kays and the Pattaya Panthers
holding their ‘slave auction’ to get the festivbities
rolling. We raised 2.65 million baht.
The next year 2002, we finally found
a home for our Children’s Fair, when Khun Sopin Thappajug
from the Diana Group offered us the spacious grounds of their
Diana Garden Resort and Driving Range. Chonburi Siam Steel Mill
Services was our Platinum Sponsor for the 5th consecutive year.
We now had 7 Platinum Sponsors. This year we raise 3.3 million baht.
In 2003, we had 11 Platinum Sponsors
plus half a million baht from our fledgling Pledge Program. Our
Fair also grew to include 72 stalls. The auction on Pub Night
headlined by Beckham signed jerseys and footballs, garnered close
to 500,000 baht. The end result was that we cracked the 4
million baht level, which was distributed among our 3
beneficiaries, the Fountain of Life Center, the Pattaya Redemptorist
School for the Blind and the Eastern Child Welfare Protection
Institute in Huay Pong.
In 2004, we went through the top
with 17 Platinum Sponsors, our biggest Fair ever with over 80
stalls and most successful Pub Night, highlighted by the auctioning
of an All-Blacks signed jersey by the team for 110,000 baht. Erik
and Robert also raised a remarkable 504,000 baht by riding their
push bikes from Chantaburi to Pattaya in just under 12 hours!
We were able to raise over 5 million baht as a result.
In 2005 we thought the going would
be tough, but, ultimately a surprising 20 Platinum Sponsors stepped
forward. This combined with the rest of our sponsors resulted
in collection 3.5 million baht before our events in September.
Our Pub Night generated almost 1.5 million baht through GR ticket
book sales, auction item bidding and sponsorship for Graham dressing
up like a fairy princess for the evening. Eric and Robert also
raised 213,000 baht for their push bike ride from Trat. The
result was 5.4 million baht that we distributed amongst 10 beneficiaries!
2006, and we kept the streak alive of continuing to beat the previous
year’s totals of money raised when we broke the 6 million
baht barrier. Twenty-three Platinum Sponsors joined us and, combined
with the other levels of sponsorship, contributed over 4.25 million
of the 6,013,000 baht ultimately raised.
And the train keeps on rolling……last
year, 2007 we had our first Diamond Sponsor (400,000 baht) courtesy
of Steve J. Lake, accompanied by 28 Platinum Sponsors in both
cash and kind. Overall, including funds in or promised this year,
over 36 million baht has been raised since 1998.
Our goal though is not to
get too hung up on trends, targets or figures, but instead to
simply try our best to raise as much money as possible for the
benefit of needy children each year. Your wonderful generosity
over the past 10 years has been a huge boon for local beneficiaries,
especially in allowing thousands of deprived children the opportunity
to get an education and the chance of a better future.
