Whoops
Missed a Week
Apologies all round for the lack of diary last week, but we had a bit of a
glitch to say the least, all is now fixed and here is last week's dairy plus
a few additions to make up for it. Expect a massive weekend for those of you
lucky enough to be in Pattaya this weekend and do not forget
the Pattaya Tens next week. Sorry again that this diary will
take so long to download but there is so much to tell you all about.
Freddie
Philbrook wins The Grand National
Even with buckets, rockets,
and bags of water being hurled about all over Pattaya for
the last few days, Jameson's has still powered along with
people risking soggy clothes to get through the doors. Finally now it is all
over and we can all get back to normal.
Marvelous weekend with lots of the usual suspects, plus lots of surprise guests.
Unfortunately The Chaing Mai Sixes are all over, and we have
said goodbye to a couple of people including Ben and Debbie, Max and
Veronica, Dag Kevin, and Harold, Sweet Freedom. Curly Wurly has also
popped off back to the Philippines leaving Ray
to go to bed for a few days to try and recover before he is off on his European
annual jaunt. Mad Mike everybody's favorite Irish
man arrived for a full month's holiday, and will be here for The Chris
Kays Memorial Pattaya Rugby Tens to be held on the 5th and
6th May at Horseshoe Point. John
is also back for a nice long holiday much to the staff's delight.
Graham Watkins had the good sense to bring with him the runners
and riders of this year Grand National which added to everybody's
enjoyment of this annual bonanza, with a horse called Simon
running in the race the smart money obviously fell on the shoulders of the
senior Philbrook. But we all should of known better, as it
was one of the younger Philbrook's that came out the winner
at the end. 'Silver Birch' romping over the line with the
colors of young Freddie Philbrook attached to his back. Freddie
accepted his winnings with good grace, and was the only Philbrook
to finish the night out richer than when he had started. The staff
also picked up the third place prize so everybody was a winner well done Freddie
may you continue to pick out winners.

Johnnie Live and Landlord Kim Fletcher sitting at Nova Table with Simon
Philbrook, who has stopped watching the cricket and is now watching his
beloved Liverpool F.C. hardly a riveting game either as Liverpool drew
0-0 with Manchester City which one feels is a better result for Jeremy
Quinn and his team. The World of Wines Red wine glasses is still Shelley's

Ah Ha the rest of the Philbrook's
will play whilst elder brother Simon is away here in the picture are Debbie,
Harry, Sarah, big winner Freddie although he did not know it at the time but
that smile on his face suggests something that he knows that we don't. Is
that a Silver Birch he is holding in his hand?

Sadly Alex, Sarah,
Freddie and Harry Philbrook have now left us, but hopefully
they will be back for a longer stay in the not to distant future. Nick
Freeman and Kieran came in and took over the library
room for the Formula One Grand Prix,
whilst as usual Mr. Racing Dr. Iain Corness
had the full use of the sports area to analysis the race. The
Super Fourteens is certainly growing in popularity as
the weeks go by Saturday
saw the sports room full of rugby fans led by Simon
Parkes and Thommo. On the rugby front do not forget
the Chris Kays Memorial Rugby Tens
next month on Saturday and Sunday 5th
and 6th May at Horseshoe Point. Jimmy Howard, Eoin Quirke, Neil Smith,
and Mark Coombes are rushing around like little demented
fly's getting everything together.

Talking of rugby we also had a magnificent visit
from the Bryant's over the weekend, Rick, Harpic,
Jake (managing to drag himself away from his new girlfriend) Paige
and Abby. Rick was his usual cheerful self, talking of sports,
Rock 'n' Roll, sex, and other things he misses in life, Harpic
looked on in a state of disarray, as although the production line for the
pickled onions is at full throttle, the branston pickle is causing the old
grey matter to be strained somewhat. Jake pined for the
new girlfriend and would of only really been happy if an open telephone
line could of been supplied. Paige and Abby played hide
the glasses as usual. Andy and Kim McTighe has been in
and out trying to dodge the flying water at all costs, and desperately trying
to collar somebody so he can tell them about all these goals that Manchester
United, apparently are scoring whilst everybody knows that just
one well taken goal is all that is needed to give your team a win. Well
done Steve and the boys, another great victory under the
belt, but please try and avoid this nasty games in Europe
next season, for several reasons really. (1) You rarely win when your games
are played live on the Thai T.V Channels. (2) All the games
are played way to late at night in Thailand for your aging
fan base to stay up that late The Reading Football Club Supporters
Club Pattaya Division North and South combined are not getting
any younger. (3) It will make it much more difficult for the writer of this
column to list your games at places I have never heard of. (4) Do you not
think there is enough of this football lark on the telly anyway? Talking
of late night sports night time is obviously not a good time for the England
Cricket team either, I am surprised they have the cheek to pick
up their salaries. I must say though I have been very proud of the Irish.
You can just imagine the phone calls can't you back to the boss in Ireland
"well you see boss, we entered this competition
in the West Indies and would you believe it? We are through
to the next round and I need another month’s holiday? "Bosses
reply" a likely story, be back here on Monday, or
your for it". I mean I doubt they even get World Cup Cricket
on the telly in Ireland with all the real sport they get
over there like Hurling etc. I mean I know this sort of story from first
hand experience.

This year when the
Malaka's went through to the finals of the Spoon Competition,
everybody had to get out of bed one more day during daylight hours to go and
play out the match. Two new names on the famous Malaka's Lemon Duck
Trophy this year and very good odds you would of got too, on it not
being these two at the beginning of the competition too. I mean I have got
the plate already for it to be Ray (Lemon) Duck, which I
shall just keep for next year when it is sure to be needed. But this year
the names go up of "Fatboy Slim'' and Marty C.H.
Geordies abound in the pub a plenty with Colin Powell
and the Mott the Hoople Gang arriving at an impossibly early
hour for Sunday lunch as you can tell by the photo they did
at least look suitably worse for wear from the previous nights exploits. Colin
is in Thailand for a full year to recover from all the hard
work he has been doing in England (pause for improbable gasp)
so you have been fairly warned, Colin will be popping back
to England quite regularly though to see his friend Ian
Hunter in concert which hopefully this year will be quite often,
although Colin will also be going back to England
if Newcastle United reach any Cup Finals
this seems less likely.

Due to the Landlord weak chest and
phobia of having dirt water thrown all over him, the burden of responsibility
of securing the safety of Nova Table has fallen rather
heavily on the shoulders of our Junior, Trainee, Assistant, Deputy,
Manager Ian (Lady Di) Harrington this week, and I must say he has
done a sterling job too, must of been all that time he spent on Oil
Rigs that gave him the confidence. Roving Ambassador Mark
Stubbs has indeed been a roving this week, so although spreading
the good word of Nova, has not always been at Lady
Di's right hand normal service will be resumed on Friday
20th April. Johnnie Live has been dashing around
as ever, often going to Bangkok in the morning but safely
making it back to Jameson's for the evening. Returning
from overseas trips this week is Rony Fineman, back to
building up the rest of Pattaya. Terry Schofield
of North Shore Real Estate keeps bursting through the door often
bringing Steve, Graham with him. If Linus
made it back to the U.K alright will he please let us know,
it is always nice to keep in touch with people, often away for a little
while, but never forgotten, heard this week from Scud, Lisa Lurve,
and David Foden as well as many e-mails from Ian Dickson,
many of which are hard to reply to how do you defend 155 all out and Monty
looked your best bat?
If you look in the Guest Book there are plenty of comments
from Bjorn from Norway, who is obviously still kickin'
up a storm in Norway. As you can see from the photo's the
Nova Table has been joined by many honorable guests this
week including, Tuesday Chicken Nick, Ian, and Joules.
Graham has become a closet Nova Table
sitter sitting on the table when he thinks that nobody else is looking.
Keeping the bar in lively conversation with Nick, Graham, Joules,
Ian have been, Mike Watkins, and the lovely Meow,
Nigel, Mike his lovely wife and baby, Steve, Stuart, Moo,
Sophie and James, Dez Tarrant, Malcolm Clare (The Root of All Evil), Lee
Hunter and Geoff, Rich Wibrow and Jeff, Jason Payne (the inventor
of new sayings!), Shelley and Eoin Quirke (the connoisseurs
of World of Wine wines served in Jameson's).
Simon and Nin Quigley, Simon and Debbie Philbrook, Paul and Joy.
I wonder what rating we will get from John Hagan this week.
You may have noticed the absence of a name that usually appears very early
on in the diary well in the tradition of keeping the best till last. Early
last week Graham MacDonald (The Font of All Knowledge)
did the most sensible thing he has ever done in his entire life and proposed
to the lovely Jay. Graham must of picked
exactly the right moment as she said yes. The whole of Jameson's
and the entire Nova Group say hearty congratulations.
As you can see this weekend looks very good for sport on the T.V with Saturday
giving us a continuous run on the Super Fourteens games
some interesting Premier League games (with Reading's
game against Bolton not being shown which one feels gives
Reading half a chance although I am reliably informed that
Bolton are a good side, and judgment should be with held
until we see which colours Reading decide to wear). The
game of cricket could be a novel interest as it maybe the last time that
most of them should ever play for England again. Whilst
on the leisure side of things if you want a good movie to watch John
Travolta starring as Woody in the movie 'Wild Hogs'
should bring a smile to most lips.
Always good to see Jimmy and Jenny Howard in the bar. As
it is to see that wonderful human being Sid Silk one of
Pattaya's favorite people. Darren and Tracy
will now be in the West Indies watching the cricket, watch
out for a wave from these good folks in the crowd, and do not forget to
wave back. Good news all round from Australia. Graham
MacDonald had a note from Paul Crouch saying that
everything was going very well with Oanh, and we all look
forward to seeing them back in the land of smiles sooner rather than later.
Yet another excuse for the website being a day late is that Thursday
19th April was Songkran Day in Pattaya, so whilst
some of us cowered at home, refusing to come outside the rest were outside
hurling water in all directions. We hope that the good graces of John
Hagan will take this into consideration?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Jameson's
have not heard from Tony and Iris Ritchie for a while, so
come on you too drop us a line if you have time. Posh Peter Woolston
is back in the land of sand and we look forward to him arriving back in the
land of smiles with his perfect sight in the very near future. Mike
Franklin has become the man on Pattaya Mail Cable T.V
doing all the interviews and very well he does them as well, in fact you would
think he had been doing them all his life, this week I have seen a very good
interview at the Fountain of Life
and a great interview with my partner Rony Fineman although
I have known Rony for more than two years now, I feel I know
him so much better after watching his interviews with Mike,
now that is quite an achievement.
General warning for this weekend is that Ray Matti has already
recovered, and is already looking for a big final two days out before his
European jaunt. You have been warned. Graham (The
Font), Simon (The ex-Cricketer) and Jason (The Soothsayer) are also
planning a night at Jameson's on Saturday,
I think a sign of people getting back into the swing of things after the Songkran
days. Malcolm Clare (The Root of All Evil) has gone back
to work for four weeks, which should give us enough time to recover from this
weekend until his return in 28 days.
Always good to see Billy (Kidney Wiper) and family surrounding
Nova Table.
That's it from me for this week, Cheers Kim.

“Our friend
Brad Cousins went to FIA G.T. Championship last weekend of March here
are his thoughts and some photos”.
Mike & Kim,
The day was quite overcast when I arrived at the circuit on the Sunday.
I really only went for the main event, which was about 3 hours long in
all, and included a driver change. Although these cars were not as fast
or as loud as F1, they were seriously fast and in the case of the Lamborghini's
LOUD also. It didn't matter where you were on the circuit, you could always
tell when one of the 2 Lambos in the race, flashed by. I much preferred
this style of racing as well. You could see cars build up to overtaking
manourvers over the laps, unlike in F1, which is more like a high speed
game of follow the leader. I was also surprised at how competitive the
Corvettes were. Although there were only 3 in the race, one led for most
of the day and all 3 were in the top 5 for different stages. They also
sounded quite phenomenal, but in a much lower, baritone register, quite
glorious, again there was no mistaking the sound of them going by.
The best racer in the field was the Silver Aston Martin DB9R. This car
was the only one in the team, but they were always pushing to improve
their position. I had hoped to see a Maseratti win, just so I could say
it had been 50 years since I had seen Stirling Moss win the 1956 Australian
Toursit Trophy in one (a glorious 300 S), but it was not to be their day.
In the end one of the Lambos made the most of an extended period behind
the safety car to grab the lead, while other teams pitted and then won
a 20 lap sprint to the final flag. The sun came out about halfway through
the race and I was almost sunburnt, by the time it was time to go home.
All these photos were taken from the main grand stand, the Lambo on the
grid, was the eventual winner, although it started in about 10th place.
Lots of fun had. I am also going to the Macao GP in November, and will
send pix of that, after the event. Cheers Bwana Brad.

SATURDAY
2nd JUNE 2007
DHL
Bangkok Lions RFC proudly present the Standard Chartered Rugby Dinner 2007
which will feature Jonah Lomu of New Zealand and Steve Thompson of England
along with our good friends and broadcasters Willie Lose and Justin “Sambo”
Sampson. Profiles of each are presented below:
• Jonah Lomu is a former New Zealand All Black who played for his country
73 times included 63 test matches. Born in Auckland of Tongan descent he grew
up in south Auckland and attended Wesley College, Phukekohe. Lomu burst onto
the international rugby scene at the 1995 Rugby World Cup held in
South Africa and is currently the all time try scorer in Rugby World Cups
with 15 tries scored during appearances in the 1995 and 1999 editions. He
has represented several teams in the National Provincial Championships as
well as the Auckland Blues, The Chiefs and The Hurricanes in the Super Rugby.
He is currently making a comeback after undergoing a kidney transplant in
2004.
• Steve Thompson is a former Northampton Saints and England hooker who
was a member of the sinning side in 2003. Having originally starting his career
as a flanker, Thompson was persuaded by former Northampton, Scotland and British
& Irish Lions coach Ian MeGeechan to switch to hooker. He was capped 47
times by England between 2002 and 2006 and twice by the Lions on their 2005
tour to New Zealand. Thompson suffered a serious neck injury whist playing
for Northampton in January 2007 which forced him to miss the entire Six Nations.
In April 2007 and at the age of 28 years old, based on medical advice he was
forced to retire from all rugby.
• Willie Lose is a good friend of the rugby community in Bangkok visiting
us frequently and assisting with the organization of the Bangkok International
Tens in 2006 and 2007 and frequently arranging for rugby memorabilia for auction
at junior rugby events. Born in West Auckland and having played for Auckland
and North Harbour Rugby Clubs, he represented Tonga at the 1995 Rugby World
Cup in South Africa. Willie spent six years playing club rugby in Japan for
Yahama Motor Company. He is currently developing a broadcasting career with
a daily show for Radio Sport in New Zealand sand has also been doing television
commentary for the IRB on the Rugby Sevens circuit at Hong Kong, Dubai and
Wellington and in 2007 has been part of the Sky TV NZ commentary team for
Super 14 Rugby
• Justin “Sambo” Sampson has been with ESPN Star Sports
for over 7 years as a rugby presenter / commentator. In November 2006 he established
Sampson Marketing Services, a sponsorship consultancy, event management and
corporate hospitality company which allows him time to concentrate on being
a prominent speaker, master of ceremonies and auctioneer at various functions
throughout the region, Middle East and Australia. Prior to joining ESPN Star,
Sampson worked with the Singapore Rugby Union for over five years as National
Coach which followed a three year spell playing and coaching for Kubota Corporation
in Tokyo, Japan.
The evening will feature a traditional Maori welcome for Jonah from the Bangkok
Maori Group and will include a four course meal and free flow wine and beer
– all for a measly THB 2,800. The function will be held at the Imperial
Queens Park Hotel on Saturday 2nd June 2007 from 7pm and there will be a number
of items of rugby memorabilia available for auction as well as other exciting
items which will be included in a raffle.
In advance of the Dinner, the four individuals above along with members of
the Bangkok Lions Committee will on Friday 1st June undertake a number of
community development initiatives including visits to schools and charities.
On the morning of Saturday 2nd June 2007 they will hold a coaching clinic
at Bangkok Patana School.
We’ve had some splendid dinners over the past few years and this please
do your best to support this event and spread the word! Rats – please
inform all at the Panthers and Panties. Jamster – please inform all
the CRAFT.
We look forward to your support and should you have any questions please feel
free to contact me.
