Kim Fletcher's famous weekly pub diaries at Jameson's started with the first publication Wednesday, January 26th, 2005.  Each Thursday night, local time, a new diary will be uploaded for your viewing pleasure.

Diary No. 97 Week of 27th November 2006 - 3rd December 2006 Updated 7th December 2006

Welcome to the beginning of the 2006 Party, with the arrival of December Jameson's and all of the Nova Group has suddenly kicked into party mode. It is as if everybody has suddenly got together, and decided it is time to kick it up a gear or two. If you consider all the people around and what is going on it is really not at all surprising. 'The Root' Malcolm Clare is back in the saddle and will not be leaving town until the 16th December when he will be having his own Malcolm's world Christmas before going back to work. 'The Root' has mellowed somewhat these days as he actually gives a warning before blasting Nova Table with drinks, not much of a warning I grant you, but it is an improvement. Graham MacDonald 'The Font of All Knowledge' arrived in all his re-found glory on Saturday night and used any excuse to up the tempo a little. The question that finally stumped the 'Font of All Knowledge's' knowledge was asked last week, why are there three lions on the front of the England Football Jersey? Answers on a postcard please to the Font of All Knowledge's quiz on this diary page please.

Nova Table on Tuesday, with Dr. Iain Corness, “The Root of All Evil” Malcolm Clare, Landlord, Jim & Jack

The recently formed local branch of the Pattaya version of the Barmy Army, England Cricket supporters group has quickly been disbanded, and thrown to the wind with the rest of the Ashes. Secrecy forbids the Landlord from telling who were these motley crew, but if you notice a few people trying to avoid direct eye contact with any Australians this will give you a clue. Personally I have just started wearing very large dark glasses, as the pub is now so bright with all the Christmas decorations. Never mind! We still have the Reading Football Club Supporters Division (North and South) Unofficial though we maybe going strong. Steve will now definitely not be able to afford to come back to Nova Table as more drinks for Bob and Kid were put on his ever expanding bill, as Reading had another terrific win last Saturday. We have all noticed a recurring trend though. If Reading are playing live on the television in Thailand, the results are disastrous, however if we have to rely upon the telly printer the results seem to be far more in our favour. A petition to ban Reading from live TV has been sent to the necessary authorities, and relegation should be avoided.

The England selectors get together to discuss what to do next
Saturday 9th December sees the Pattaya Charity Club having a party for the kids, which officially starts our Christmas season. I know it sounds a bit of a corny line but bookings for Christmas Day are literally flooding in. So if you are thinking about spending part of Christmas Day, with us please book up as soon as you have had a look at our Christmas menu which is displayed here on this diary page. If you have already booked you can always check your booking in the book on the stand at the main door of Jameson's.
The Tuesday Special has been given a complete shake up as well the new Tuesday menu which along with all the other specials is served from midday till midnight is a choice of two starters, followed by Poached Chicken Breast covered in a rich white wine sauce garnished with olives served with fried rice, garden peas, grilled tomato, and corn on the cob, followed by a choice of dessert all for 175 baht, how can you possibly miss out, on that??
Talking of booking up the annual 'JIGS' Christmas Golf Jamboree 'The Jingerbens' Pairs Scramble takes place on Friday 22nd December is nearly upon us, and the starting times are filling up fast. For full details please look up our golf page on this website, as usual Mike Franklin will be working up some Christmas wonder, with the help of our good sponsors Terry Schofield from North Shore Real Estate, and John Fox of Q Cars.
I do not quite understand why? But have had a lot of e-mails and text messages from Ian Dickson especially on Tuesday of this week when it all went so wrong for England, I must say that other Australians have been much more polite, Andrew Watts, the lovely Tracy and Darren and especially David Garred who never said a word for Oh almost five seconds. Never mind we still have the DVD's from last year. Having kept Simon Edmonds up to date with the score for four days, Nova Table hardly dared give him the message on the fifth day, and when we did we had to re-send it as he could not believe what he was reading. Thanks for the DVD's Simon, it helps to keep our minds occupied.

Half Pint looks after Cyril & May
Of course in actual fact Ian Dickson was not the only person that we heard from this week, although Ian certainly had the edge on everybody else, but good to hear from Simon Edmonds, Neil Sandilands, John Hagan, Dai Coe, Lisa Lurve, as gorgeous as ever, Scud, David Foden, and the Cyclops.

At Nova with Lady Di, Jim & Stuart

Joules, Graham, & Nick
Andy McTighe came back from China and hastily made up for lost time before rushing off again, the always smiling Terry Schofield, helping out with the wine tasting from Richard Waller and David Williamson's new company The World of Wine were Eoin and Shelley Quirke, Simon and the lovely Debbie, Kc of Town and Country, Stuart, Moo, Sophie and James, Jason, Nui, and Leo Payne, all giving the new wines a solid thumbs up, it was good to have a committee dicsion on the new wines as the Landlord cannot remember much about the fifth bottle.
What makes a good bar great is the great people that go in it, we are very fortunate at Jameson's to have some really great people, amongst whom are, Andrew Watts, Jimmy Howard, Buster and Lek, Graham, Nick, and Joules, Rob and Wit, Dennis and Lek, Jack and Jin Levy, Rich Wibrow, the quickly back Jim, Mosquito Bill Johnstone, Malhotra's all, Iain and Som Corness (there is a very strong rumour of Iain getting back behind the racing wheel again very soon), Lady Di and the Mark Stubbs computer club, Graham (Superman) and Ung Watkins, of course Rony Fineman and all his family and Pals. Mike and Banjob Franklin and family, Malcolm and Christina Bowden, Ray Matti and Curly Wurly, Bob Finch from TQ, Lyndon and Karyn, Lewis Underwood, Scar, Captain Steve and younger brother Bill, Dobsy, Patrick of Flying Frog fame, Fini, Sadistic Robert, Ken eating his take always in the bar, Geoff Evans, who has bravely gone to work in Australia during the Ashes. Glen Tyler, Rick and Harpic, The Pattaya Football Team are still at the top of the League, well done boys.
The lovely Tim with Kid
Fantastic to see Cyril and May walk through the door, what a meeting of great Wales minds that will be when they meet up with Mike (Spike) Watkins, in the very near future. Jim Gilmore is always a great character to have around the bar dispensing wisdom and laughter in equal doses. Johnny Live everybody's favourite hairdresser, has been whizzing around the bar as usual. John Fox of Q cars, Matt the Wig, Kevin Fisher, Lars came in with another Kim, and we are expecting Welsh Kim and Nid very soon. Sean from CUEL has been a regular when he can get off his motor bike planning another spectacular Christmas party at Jameson's, our resident sports expert Sid Silk. See you at the bar, Kim.

What do Geoffrey Boycott and Jason Gillespie have in common?
Both were dropped from their national test teams after making double centuries. ( But the ABC commentators suggest the 200 against Bangladesh should be divided by 10 to convert to a real test score).

Hi Kim
Difficult responding to so many text messages so will revert to email.

How are you? Recovered from the flogging in the first test? Some really interesting results – form of Ponting and Langer, Hussey continued where he left off last summer; and a very focused Clarke playing for his test spot; McGrath’s form with the ball, lack of impact of Lee and Warne ( even though he bowled well); Gilchrist test batting form continues and the surprise packet in Stuart Clark? Collingwood and Pietersen played so well in the second innings but Harmison looks dreadful – his first up ball will feature on many re-runs through the summer here!! Where will the bowling depth come from to take 20 wickets in 5 days? Very pleased to see both Giles and Jones in the side, though in fairness Jones has not made a major stuff up ( even if he has not exactly starred with the bat). I had thought a small SMS, well done, well played, you were lucky etc might have been forthcoming but obviously the finger had stuffed up. You were certainly not drunk celebrating!! Interesting to see how the ageing Australian bodies respond given how close the tests are – Ponting slight back strain, McGrath feet blisters may be the start of things to come. But with Jacques ( back to back 100’s against England); McGill ( third best spinner in the world currently); Watson as a test alrounder coming back from injury and two young quicks waiting for a chance after blooding, I am confident we have more depth then in UK last year where we needed Gillespie and co to fire. Oh, I forgot, we also have the best tail ender in the world if we need strength as a night watchman ( which only goes to confirm our many discussions in Jameson’s on why Bangladesh should be dropped from test status and why all records against them should be expunged).

Rarely have the mobile phone out of the car over weekends – work is not 7 days a week here and most people would ring on the land line. Cricket is usually radio ( better commentary) with an odd TV at session breaks to watch the replays ( too many ads otherwise). Life here has been very busy between work / travel; renovations at home; gardening, families, social life etc. Lovely time of year in the garden and weather has been very pleasant. From late Nov on very busy with work functions with customers and social functions with neighbours and friends. Pat’s daughter and grandchildren will be here for several days on 16th; Robbie William’s concert 18th; McDonald on 23rd; Xmas Eve BBQ with neigbours 24th; all of Pat’s family on 26th before Melbourne test in a corporate box 27th and 28th with Mcdonald ( not sure if we should sleep in the box or try for a train home?); and then tennis at Australian Open mid Jan in a Corporate box. Some how also need to fit some work functions in between and also friends.

Second Test is at an interesting stage. England have been steady early but probably too slow day 1. They had stated prior to the test they would be happier going to the third test with a draw which belies how aggressive they could be. Harmison has continued to be ordinary; Hoggart has played really well; Giles is bowling for economy but has been predicable; and the partnership between Collingwood and Pietersen has been sensational. Take that out and England would be vulnerable to a loss. Collingwood with 300 runs after 2 tests would have gotten good odds before the series. Ponting failing narrowly to average 200 after two tests ( 199 average to date) has been the backbone of the fightback and Martin failing to impress ( despite excellent form in India and Malaysia ) could see him lose a spot to Watson for the third test if Clarke goes onto to score well today.

So where to today? Ponting still believes Australia is positioned to win. I think if anyone were to win, more likely England with the first session today the key. If Australia bat out the first and part of the second session, then they will score 120 – 150 runs and finish around 460. Gives England a lead of 90 -100 with 4.5 sessions to play. Unlikely they would give Australia a bat so a draw is likely unless they were bowled out in 3 sessions which could see an Australian run chase for 300 from 2 sessions. If Australia were bowled out in < 1 sessions, England could bat for two sessions; chase runs to set a target and leave 3 sessions to try and set up a win – danger is unless the target is > 400 then England could misjudge and lose, or could be bowled out early trying to force the pace. Given 850 plus runs in 3 days for 11 wickets, difficult to see 20 wickets in the last two days given the conditions.

Take care, regards to everyone at the table from Pat and I – roll onto!!
Regards
Ian Dickson

Good morning Kim,
Thought I'd drop you a line to let you know how its going. It hasn't snowed for 2 weeks now, probably too cold! We had a BBQ on the beach yesterday, it was a bit nippy to start with, -13C ' at about 9 in the morning, but it had warmed up to a balmy - 4C ' by the time we wnt to the beach. Plenty of beer, chilled to perfection, plenty of vodka and brandy and some excellent kebabs were enjoyed by all as we chatted and watched ice start to form as the sea started to freeze over.
See you all in a few weeks.
Regards
Neil

Cheers, see you at the Bar.
