Diary No. 227 Week of 13th July 2009
- 19th July 2009 Updated 23rd July 2009
Marathon
Men....
What a superbly
organized event. The Pattaya Marathon was completed
by the Fat Landlord (well the Half
Marathon). But I must say how well organized it all
was, I never knew people could be so well organized in that
time of day, but they were. Everything went of with split second
timing, considering the thousands of people who were about to
run there legs into the ground a real achievement, getting everything
done on time etc. Then on the actual Run (well Walk ...............Stroll?)
There were loads of stocked up water stops all with people buzzing
about filling up cups full of icy water, energy drinks, fruit,
etc all laughing and joking and cheering at the same time. Marvelous.
Ashley was there doing the 1/4 Marathon
I must admit a few facts though. I got there nicely on time,
thanks to our wonderful Driver 'Brake' who
picked me up on his motorbike at 3.30 in the morning,
I wanted to be early as I did not want to let anybody down,
I never imagined it would be so well organized, no hassle at
all clear announcements in Thai and English,
everybody milling about with smiles on their faces. I of course
then nearly dropped the bomb by burning my leg on the motorcycle
exhaust fortunately not badly. Then I met up with Alex
Woods and at exactly 5.00 a.m. off
we jolly well went. Everybody (including Alex)
disappeared into the distance and by the time I got to Dolphin
Roundabout I was 'Man walking alone' Head Bartender
Bob with his Side Kick J.J came and
ran along for about 10 yards before thinking better of it, Moo
and Wanchai came down to give me a send off, but got
lost (getting lost Wanchai and Moo on Beach
Road in Pattaya ..... Hmmmm). The Police
had all the roads blocked off and I thought as I was way behind
everybody else they would not be happy with me, but not a bit
of it, at every intersection I got a little cheer, the traffic
halted as I was ushered through. Almost Surreal. At the top
of North Road, the Ambulance
designated for the Half Marathon picked up
my trail and followed me all the way round, really nice people
in the Ambulance, like my own little mini crowd.
The actual Full Marathon runners passed me
on Sukhumvit Road, which was great because
all the time then there was somebody around, all passing me
of course, but all with a cheery comment as they flew past me.
Then on the home stretch it was great fun with loads of people
(most of whom I kinda think had not been to bed) cheering anything
that moved. Quite an anti-climax when you actually finished.
Everybody got aMedal
(even fat old people like me). Extraordinarily I was back in
the Pub by 8.45 a.m. wondering what to do with
the rest of the day.
Kim Fletcher doing a very good impression of a Meatball
with legs about to do a Marathon
Many Thanks to Tom and Brake for all the photos on the diary
this week
I would
like to add a great Big Thank You to all the
people who gladly sponsored me to get round, it was certainly
very inspirational. The Money will go towards
making My Mum Edna Harrisson a Platinum Sponsor for
The Jesters Care4Kids Charity Drive 2009. So we know
that every penny will be well spent. The Jesters
themselves were my first Major Sponsors which
made me very proud in itself, Bob Davis took
over the role of Manager with aplomb, and Sponsor Organizer
etc, it was Steve Page's idea to get sponsorship
(so that was a good idea). Brian Abbott and Dobsy
sent me home in time on Saturday night and
all the following people sponsored me: Ray Campbell,
Steve Page, Derek Hunter, Derek McTighe, Ian Harrington, Chris
Lock, Sasitorn, Sam Peebles, Steve Hogarth, Kevin Frost, Victor
Zac, Hoser, Blowfly, Slacky, Nick Frost, Rich Wibrow, Little
Big Dave Hoyle, Peter Malhotra, Flemming Schulthess, Geoff Evans,
Tony Bailey, Sid Silk, Richard, Graham Macdonald, P. Hoossa,
Alex Woods, Paul Dobby, Paul Holmes, M.A.Simons, Jimmy (Brum),
Paul Strachan, The Jesters, Bob Davis, Capt. Steve, John, Deb
& Simon, Tropical Bert, Bruce, Alison, K.C, Chicken Nick,
Pet-Hot-Restaurant, Mark Hepburn, Kevin Stewart, Barrie Scarboro,
Brian Abbott, Coun Hasons, Graham Woo, Simon Quigley, Jimmy
Howard, Kevin Ganzevoort, Dave Pearce, John Kennedy, Mark Gorda,
Peter Bull, Muffy Kerr, Darren H., Jim Sherman, Dave D., John
M., & Paul.
Now I might of actually been bringing up the rear in the
Half Marathon, BUT in the over 50's category for playing
air guitar or keyboards all the way round (much to the amusement
of my own Ambulance crew). I easily came first. My thanks go
out to Geoff Evans for powering me round the
course with my brand newBirthday
Present of an iPod, and my trustee hat no wonder I
got a smile wherever I went, Edna of Havenwear for the
splendid socks, Middleborough for the shorts!
The Jesters who supplied me with the perfect
shirt and Bandana for the run. My mate Brake
for getting me there, and taking me back to the Pub afterwards,
Alex Woods for his commitment, and Woody
our Care4Kids President, who gave me full support,
and Kevin Mitch, who came down to see me along
the Jomtien Beach Road stretch. Most of all
I thank the Organizers, at the start and finish
lines, and the all important in-between bits, and all the people
who actually ran the Marathon, and so kindly
put up with me.

The Landlord
as usual is milking hisBirthday

House Harriers (who really proved they are a
Drinking Club with a chronic running problem) and has
carried on all this week, Lunch at Bruno's
the works, getting old disgracefully. Friday
sees us with a dual party firstly for the Pattaya Sports
Club and their Monthly Golf Tournament presentation,
followed by the Pattaya Community Players having
a shindig with the idea of attracting some new blood into their
ranks. So all of you with golfing aspirations should see Perry
McNeeley immediately, or those with dreams of treading
the boards should also come along to the Pub on Friday
night. Saturday sees the second game
in the Tri-Nations with South Africa hosting the New
Zealand All Blacks. After last weeks, game this should
be a really good game. Kick off will be at 7.00 p.m.
on Saturday 25th July. When the Landlord
promises that this will also be the last day of his
Birthday Celebrations .........Till next year.
Of course this week has
seen many people dashing into the bar in need of refreshments.
Abbott's of all shapes and sizes, Birmingham
Jimmy, RayC, Young Steve, we obviously all miss our
regular visits from Scottish Derek, all of the Pattaya
Hash House Harriers who so kindly gave me the
Plague which will be up on the wall in pride of place
by the time you read this. Johny Live is as
talkative as ever, it was great seeing Mark Stubbs,
Farmer Harrington, nice to get Birthday Greetings
from Penelope Main (who's she?). Two major sports events
this week. The second in the Tri-Nations Rugby Series
with the South African Springboks taking on the New Zealand
All Blacks at 9.00 p.m. on Saturday 25th July. Followed

Kim Fletcher and Jameson's thoughts
turn to the Jesters Care4Kids Charity Drive 2009
The Jesters Care4Kids Charity
Drive is coming up very quickly. Let me just remind you of the
dates for the main events on Sunday 13th September 2009 is the
Jesters Care4Kids Charity Fair at the Diana Driving Range and
Resort, which this year looks like it is going to be even bigger
and better this year than last (if that is possible). Kevin Mitch
once again stepping into the breach, and doing all the organization
in his usual brilliant military precision style. Now whilst talking
about the Fair can I also remind everybody that Jameson's amongst
other things, has a Used Book Stall at the Fair run by Judi McNamara.
The Used Book Stall is always great fun and also raises a nice
lot of money for the kids. It is simple logic. (A) You kindly
donate to us all your old used books, which can be dropped off
at Jameson's or TQ any time, the earlier the better so we can
get them sorted. (B) You come to the Fair, and then buy a lot
of good books at a cheap price, come early for the best selection.
(C) We give all the money we raise to Kevin who hands it on to
the Care4Kids Charity Drive. Easy.
The next event after the Fair is the Jesters Care4Kids Charity
Party Night at Jameson's on Saturday 19th September 2009 which
will feature Paul Jackson as our compeer, Music from Mike Gerrard,
Rick and Harpic Bryant, and to bring us all to a Rockin' close
Pop's Pattaya All Stars and assorted guests. On that night there
will also be the arrival of Eric and Robert from their marathon
Charity Bike Ride always an amazing feat of endurance, the climax
to the Raffle and the fantastic Jesters Care4Kids Charity Auction.
The Auction Site is up and running, with lots of good things up
there already, all you have to do is click on the link on the
left hand side of this page and you will be whisked into Ron Keeley
of World of Wine Auction Site, there is plenty to look at and
you might even fancy putting a bid in yourself. Plenty already
have.
There are plenty of ways of helping the Jesters Care4Kids Charity
Drive 2009, Obviously by coming to the Fair, and the Party Night,
making bids on the Auction Site, buying Raffle Tickets, buying
T-Shirts, taking a Bumper Sticker for your car, taking and reading
one of our brochures and showing them to other people (all available
at Jameson's or TQ). If you would like to know some more right
now please click on the link on the right hand side of the page
for the Jesters Care4Kids and you will go on a journey to see
all about us the website. It is regularly updated and is run by
our Chairman, Lewis (Woody) Underwood, and our Webmaster David
Smith, a very good Charity, run by some wonderful people, to help
those less fortunate than others.
