Here we go again. The Chris Kays Rugby Tens Tournament is upon once again. Which always brings out the best in everyone. If you want to hear some good rugby stories this weekend Jameson's is the place to be. The actual stories about Chris Kays himself are always the best.
Jimmy Howard and Eoin Quirke have been running around making sure that everything will run smoothly, and Mark Coombes and Ron Keeley have been doing all the technical stuff (things that people like Eoin, Jimmy, and myself would not understand!). So if you’re a rugby fan Horseshoe Point is the place to be during the day whilst Jameson's comes to life in the evenings. Maps etc are all included on this page.

Bruce Birchal has already arrived nice and early, Bruce always lives the life of enthusiasm. Big Geoff dropped in for a quick beer and stayed for plenty. Saturday night turned into a torrid affair after the high point of Reading winning again (really have to be careful we don't get pushed into Europe here Steve, it is bad enough having to play the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, etc 2 or 3 times a season without dragging all these Spanish, Italian, and German teams into the equation). After that it was of course the turn of the cricket players to try and at least give us one game in the World Cup worth watching, as you know by now of course they failed miserably and what has been a miserable World Cup finished in a complete shambles. Noticeably nobody actually takes responsibility for the chaos that reigns throughout. The Cricket fans dwindled away during the game leaving the hard core of Jimmy Howard, Glen Tyler, Dobsy, Andy, Simon and Debbie, Johnnie Live, Stuart Daly, Thommo, Zorba, but there were some very tired eyes by 5.30 a.m. that were finding it hard to believe what was going on. There can be little doubt Australia were head and shoulders above the other teams in the tournament, but it was hardly a glorious victory, and I think most people, players, spectators, and all are glad it is over.

On the up side of course the sailing is now live on the telly, and this is proving to be very exciting. Fortunately our young Deputy, Assistant, Trainee, Junior Manager Ian (Lady Di) Harrington is a bit of a sailing expert, and is teaching us all the rules and the correct terminology, by the time of the America's cup we will be the most informed bar crowd in Pattaya. "Ahoy there Shipmates", "Pass the drinks to the Starboard side, "Don't steal my wind" etc.

Mark Stubbs our own Jameson's roving ambassador and computer expert has managed to make a couple of appearances over the last week, but unfortunately with his roving portfolio, and so many holidays it is hard to keep him in one place for long. The same of course can be said of Rick Bryant who must be grateful that his company does not have an office on the moon, otherwise they would be sending him there on a regular basis. However we have had the pleasure of all the Bryant's this week Rick, Harpic, Jake, Paige and Abby, usually bearing gifts as they have moved houses, and Nova Table has been the lucky restraint of books, DVD's and the biggest bag of video's you have ever seen. 9 now all we need to do is find video player). David Green, and Mosquito Bill came bursting through the door with the best missile in the world Scud (Paul) whose brief holiday literally flew past, but he is now a permanent resident.
Terry Schofield of North Shore Real Estate has been leading from the front as ever, with the T&A golf trophy firmly over on his side of the bar. Although Andy McTighe should be back next week. Sid Silk has been at his funniest best this week showing his grand knowledge of sailing by explaining that in sailing starting was more important than finishing!

Chris kept us well amused with his playing on the little guitar, Mike Watkins and Meow admitting that they still ached from laughing the following day. The boys and girls at the bar wished a fond farewell to Chris and Jenny seen with tears in their eyes were Darren and Poppy, Rob and Wit, Graham, Joules, Jim Gilmore, Mad Mike, walking stick John quietly having a drink with head bartendy Pia. Nick, Dennis and Lek, and Ian. Although those tears were soon wiped away as we celebrated Jimmy's birthday, oh what a shallow lot we are. Anyway two days after Chris made his big departure he was back again! He has now left again, but promises to be back on holiday soon.
Graham (The Font of all Knowledge) has been in a lot this week mostly with business meetings but fortunately some pleasure as well, and will no doubt be very prominent over the Chris Kays Pattaya Tens Rugby Tournament weekend. Blowfly has been in to check on his computer duties over the weekend, two regulars who will not be at the Tens this year are Alistair (our man from the home office) and Malcolm Clare (The Root of All Evil) but beware the Root will be back next week. Ray Matti is still off cavorting round Europe. We were also honoured with a splendid visit from our website ranker John Hagan and his infamous sidekick Jerry. Jason Payne has been saying his soothes around the bar, whilst Rich has been spellbound by the football. Always good to see Ernie Bakke, The Dream Team will be in action next week.

Monday was Peebles Day as the library area was turned into party time by Sam Peebles and the gang, Motorbike Shaun, Paul, Vince, Big and Little Pete, now these guys know how to party and always give the pub great atmosphere when they come in. As does Colin Powell and his Geordies mates who come in every lunch time in the hope that the daily special will cure all of their ills from the night before, and I have to say it normally works, as they bounce back out the door, ready to take on the rigours of Pattaya once more. George and Budgie can always be found in the pool area.

Rony Fineman came in the bar and joined us at Nova Table, Kim and Rony on the same table a rare sight and a photo should of been taken. This is only a rare sight as Rony is always so busy rushing from here to there whilst the Landlord is quite content to sit on his stool at the table. Great to see Lars Fieste in the bar. Tony Malhotra, The Mike Watkins gang, Mike on his way through joining the table and helping Lady Di with the nautical terms. Sporting questions over the weekend were attempted to be answered by Graham Watkins, the returning Big Ken Fricasse, and the lovely Sue, Eoin and Shelley Quirke, Simon and Debbie, but either the questions were too difficult or just perhaps it was a little to late at night!

 DHL Bangkok Lions RFC proudly present the Standard Chartered Rugby Dinner 2007 which will feature Jonah Lomu of New Zealand and Steve Thompson of England along with our good friends and broadcasters Willie Lose and Justin “Sambo” Sampson. Profiles of each are presented below:
• Jonah Lomu is a former New Zealand All Black who played for his country 73 times included 63 test matches. Born in Auckland of Tongan descent he grew up in south Auckland and attended Wesley College, Phukekohe. Lomu burst onto the international rugby scene at the 1995 Rugby World Cup held in South Africa and is currently the all time try scorer in Rugby World Cups with 15 tries scored during appearances in the 1995 and 1999 editions. He has represented several teams in the National Provincial Championships as well as the Auckland Blues, The Chiefs and The Hurricanes in the Super Rugby. He is currently making a comeback after undergoing a kidney transplant in 2004.
• Steve Thompson is a former Northampton Saints and England hooker who was a member of the sinning side in 2003. Having originally starting his career as a flanker, Thompson was persuaded by former Northampton, Scotland and British & Irish Lions coach Ian MeGeechan to switch to hooker. He was capped 47 times by England between 2002 and 2006 and twice by the Lions on their 2005 tour to New Zealand. Thompson suffered a serious neck injury whist playing for Northampton in January 2007 which forced him to miss the entire Six Nations. In April 2007 and at the age of 28 years old, based on medical advice he was forced to retire from all rugby.
• Willie Lose is a good friend of the rugby community in Bangkok visiting us frequently and assisting with the organization of the Bangkok International Tens in 2006 and 2007 and frequently arranging for rugby memorabilia for auction at junior rugby events. Born in West Auckland and having played for Auckland and North Harbour Rugby Clubs, he represented Tonga at the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa. Willie spent six years playing club rugby in Japan for Yahama Motor Company. He is currently developing a broadcasting career with a daily show for Radio Sport in New Zealand sand has also been doing television commentary for the IRB on the Rugby Sevens circuit at Hong Kong, Dubai and Wellington and in 2007 has been part of the Sky TV NZ commentary team for Super 14 Rugby
• Justin “Sambo” Sampson has been with ESPN Star Sports for over 7 years as a rugby presenter / commentator. In November 2006 he established Sampson Marketing Services, a sponsorship consultancy, event management and corporate hospitality company which allows him time to concentrate on being a prominent speaker, master of ceremonies and auctioneer at various functions throughout the region, Middle East and Australia. Prior to joining ESPN Star, Sampson worked with the Singapore Rugby Union for over five years as National Coach which followed a three year spell playing and coaching for Kubota Corporation in Tokyo, Japan.
The evening will feature a traditional Maori welcome for Jonah from the Bangkok Maori Group and will include a four course meal and free flow wine and beer – all for a measly THB 2,800. The function will be held at the Imperial Queens Park Hotel on Saturday 2nd June 2007 from 7pm and there will be a number of items of rugby memorabilia available for auction as well as other exciting items which will be included in a raffle.
In advance of the Dinner, the four individuals above along with members of the Bangkok Lions Committee will on Friday 1st June undertake a number of community development initiatives including visits to schools and charities. On the morning of Saturday 2nd June 2007 they will hold a coaching clinic at Bangkok Patana School.
We’ve had some splendid dinners over the past few years and this please do your best to support this event and spread the word! Rats – please inform all at the Panthers and Panties. Jamster – please inform all the CRAFT.
